Vacation: Is it a Good Thing or a Bad Thing?

Whenever I’ve gone on vacation, I notice something about the way I feel. I’m always calm, relaxed, and having fun, but my body is not always in love with the changes.

If you’re like me, vacation mode may not always be a good thing. I try to stick to my routine by bringing workout gear and making sure I move each day and while that helps, it’s sometimes not enough.

When I go into vacation mode, I’m a on autopilot for a bit. I get a chance to relax and be a bit more carefree. And as expected, I’m a bit more lax with what I eat and drink. Sometimes I even forego my workouts because I feel like I deserve a break. Ever felt this way? I bet you’re nodding.

In the past, I used to go away on a trip and eat and drink whatever I wanted. I wouldn’t workout because I was on vacation and didn’t think I needed to put in any effort. And sleep? Forget about it! Doing this repeatedly led me to have the hardest time getting back to reality. Over time, I realized that vacation mode wasn’t all that great.

Here’s what I noticed…

The GoodThe Bad
I’d get to relax and be distraction free for a bit.I would eat way too much or eat food that was way too rich.
Being off for a number of days is almost like being in Heaven.Drinking to the excess would be a norm for me.
Stress levels would disappear. My sleep would be almost non-existant.
The food and drinks I’d get to have would be delicious. Not being in my own bed would be an adjustment.
Traveling to a new a place is always fun.Exercising was never on the agenda.

These are just some of the observations I had. But does it really answer the question I initially had? “Is going on vacation a good thing or a bad thing?” Honestly, I think it depends. Traveling is one of my one true loves so I do it. But in order to keep myself somewhat normal, I try to stick to my routine. I eat what I normally would eat at home, I make sure to drink enough water, and I try to go to bed at a decent hour. But the most important part is this – I ENJOY my time off! And you should do the same!

But when you return, get yourself back quick so you can feel human again. Here’s another post to help you do just that.
