Laughter is the Best Medicine

UPDATED 02/09/2025

Life is better when we laugh, isn’t it? I have looked around lately and noticed that Americans might be a bit too focused on work. When that happens, we tend to forget what is really important in life. You’ve heard people say laughter is the best medicine, right? Well, I’m starting to realize it’s really true. It’s one of the best gifts life has to offer and if we let it in, we can certainly reap its rewards.

Think back to the last time you laughed. How did it feel? A good laugh can change your whole outlook on life. Sometimes it can even stop anger in its tracks so you can become happier. And who doesn’t want to be happier? Life can be super stressful and if we’re not careful, that stress can take over pretty quickly. But there are things you can do to prevent the take over.

Have you ever gotten together with friends and laughed so hard that you cried? I’m talking about that type of cry that gives you a belly ache. The kind of laugh where your stomach starts to cramp up and you’re in pain, but can’t stop laughing. For me, that type of laugh used to happen a lot. Not as much any more, but if I wanted to bring it back, here’s what I’d do.

Host a game night. I’m talking about an old fashioned board game night. It’s a perfect way to get people together, have some delicious food, and lots of fun. While it might sound like something your parents would do, you just have to try it. It’s a night with no electronics and you don’t have to spend a ton of money. Not only do you laugh until your belly hurts, you get to spend precious time together building relationships.

If a game night doesn’t seem like it would fit into your schedule, find something else that you and your friends would love to do together. Just make sure you find a way to incorporate laughter into the activity. Even better, try to laugh at least once a day. Crack a joke with a coworker, read a comic, or watch a funny Reel on Instagram because laughter truly IS the best medicine! If you have other ideas, I’d love to hear them as I’m always looking for ways to laugh.
