Do You Have a Reward System?

Ever been in a high-pressure situation and nail it? When that happens, you need to be loud, proud, and celebrate. This is why you need to have a reward system.

If you don’t have a reward system or don’t think you should have one, think again. Here’s why – most people reward themselves with food or beverages, adult beverages, or something even worse. Think about it… When you have something BIG happen in your life, do you celebrate with dinner and drinks? For most, this is their go-to. But what about shopping or a spa day? How about that book that’s been on your wish list? This is why you need to have a plan in place for your reward system.

Here’s the thing, I used to be that person that rewarded myself with food and beverages. I still do from time to time, but I’ve learned that there’s a way to be a bit more mindful about celebrating. If you don’t have one in place yet, it’s ok. I want to help you create one. This type of system can work for you and your children! Over time, it will teach you to celebrate every win, no matter the size.

To help you get started, I’m going to give you some examples of the ways I’ve rewarded myself in the past. You’ll notice that the size of the rewards vary. That’s ok because the way I see it, the rewards are meant to align with the accomplishment itself.

The AccomplishmentThe Reward
My first 5KYears ago I wanted to be a runner. So I decided to start training. I did C25K and felt great! Instead of running a typical 5K, though, I took it up a notch. I ran a 5K mud run. When I tell you it was amazing, please believe me. It was so much fun! Instead of celebrating with food and beers, I bought myself some new workout gear and a bracelet with a charm that was running shoes. My reward symbolized my accomplishments and didn’t add to my waistline.
My promotion at work (former employer)When I started working, right out of college, I had no idea what I wanted to do. So, like many, I started in corporate. My head was down, I worked my tail off, and eventually, I was recognized. I was at a new desk, made more money, and had a new job title. But instead of celebrating with a cocktail with colleagues, I purchased a new mug. I was able to use it at work and feel proud every time I had my morning coffee.
I paid off my credit cardMan, this one took a while. I knew it was coming because I was trying so hard to get out of debt and when it finally happened I was thrilled. But at first, I had no idea how to celebrate. Then it hit me! I could take that payment that was going toward the credit card and put it in an account to put toward something else – travel plans, a new kitchen, or even a birthstone ring.

When you look at my examples, what comes up for you? Does it help you start thinking creatively? Remember to think outside of the box. Don’t just jump to rewarding yourself with food and beverages. Yes, those things will give you immediate satisfaction, but in the end, it won’t be great for your health. Instead, develop a reward system that doesn’t involve food or beverages. Every time you see that bracelet on your wrist, you’ll smile a little and release those happy hormones.

So here’s your challenge… Create your reward system! Make one for yourself and get the kids involved to create theirs. Get a process in place now so that when you’re ready to celebrate, your reward system will be there ready and waiting for you.
