Building a Business Step by Step: What Lego Taught Me About Running a Business

I’ve been building Lego sets since I was a kid. And now, as an adult with my own business, I still love it.

There’s something incredibly satisfying about opening the box, dumping out all the pieces, and slowly building something from scratch. One brick at a time. Step by step.

And the more I build Lego sets, the more I realize this is exactly the same as building a business step by step.

Seriously. Stick with me here.

Lesson 1: You Need Instructions (But You Can Still Get Creative)

Every Lego set comes with instructions. Step-by-step directions that tell you exactly what to do and when to do it. And yeah, you could ignore them, just dump all the pieces out, and start building whatever you want. But if you want to actually finish the set—if you want it to look like it’s supposed to and function the way it’s designed to—you need to follow the instructions.

In business, those instructions are your systems. You need a process for how you onboard clients. A workflow for how you deliver your services. And a system for how you manage your finances, your inbox, and your projects.

Without those instructions, you’re just winging it. Sure, you might build something, but it probably won’t be what you envisioned, and it definitely won’t be sustainable. But just because you have instructions doesn’t mean you can’t get creative.

Once you know the system, you can tweak it. Make adjustments and make it yours. The instructions give you the foundation. But the creativity comes in how you execute them.

Lesson 2: You Have to Build One Piece at a Time

When you open a Lego set, you don’t look at the 1,000 pieces and try to build everything at once. If you did, you’d lose your mind. So instead, you start with step one. You find the pieces you need, put them together, and then you move to step two.

One piece at a time. One step at a time. That’s how you build a business, too.

You don’t launch everything at once. Or try to have the perfect website, the perfect offer, the perfect systems, the perfect team, and the perfect marketing strategy all on day one.

You start with one thing. Then, you build it. You make sure it works. And when you know it does, you move to the next thing.

Maybe you start with one service. Then you add a system to support it. When it’s solid, you add another service. Then you build a workflow to support it. And when you’re ready, you bring on help.

One piece at a time.

Because trying to do everything at once? That’s how you burn out. It’s how you end up with a business that’s held together with bubble gum and duct tape.

But building a business step by step? That’s how you create something solid. Something that lasts.

Lesson 3: Sometimes You Have to Take It Apart and Rebuild

Here’s the thing about Lego sets: Sometimes you mess up.

You miss a step, put a piece in the wrong spot, or realize three pages later that something’s off. So, you have to backtrack. And when that happens, you don’t throw the whole set away. You take apart the section that’s wrong, figure out where you went off track, and rebuild it correctly.

Business is exactly the same.

Sometimes things don’t work. A service doesn’t land, a system breaks, or a strategy flops. When that happens, your first decision isn’t to quit. Instead, you identify what’s not working, take it apart, and figure out what went wrong. Then, you rebuild it better.

Pivoting isn’t failure. It’s part of the process.

Lesson 4: The Process Matters as Much as the Finished Product

When I’m building a Lego set, I’m not just focused on getting to the end. I truly enjoy the process.

For me, it’s about keeping my brain working when I’m not working. I find the right pieces, snap them together, and watch the build take shape. The finished product is great, but the building is where the joy is.

And that’s true in business too. Yes, I want to hit your goals and see my business grow. I want the revenue, the clients, and the success. But if I’m only focused on the end result, and I hate every step of getting there, that defeats the whole purpose. And it’s not sustainable.

You have to enjoy the process of building a business step by step. Figuring out where all the pieces go and in what order. And you have to celebrate the small wins along the way.

Because the truth is, there’s no “finished” in business. There’s always another goal, another level, and another thing to build. So if you’re not enjoying the process, you’ll burn out long before you get where you’re going.

Lesson 5: Structure + Creativity = Magic

Here’s what I love most about Lego: It’s structured and creative.

You have the instructions, the pieces, and the framework. But within that structure, there’s still room to play.

That’s the sweet spot in business. You need structure—systems, processes, and frameworks. Without that, everything’s chaos. But you also need creativity—the ability to adapt, to innovate, and to do things your way.

If you have too much structure, you feel trapped. And if you have too much chaos, you’re going to feel overwhelmed. But when you find the balance? That’s when the magic happens.

What I’ve Built (One Brick at a Time)

Three years ago, I left corporate and started this business with no plan, no systems, and no idea what I was doing. But I started building. One piece at a time.

I built a platform and started offering services. Then I built a system to support it. As time went on and I gained more experience, I added more services. Then I refined my processes and started positioning myself differently. Then I created packages and stopped charging hourly.

Now I’m stepping into the Online Business Manager role I’ve been filling all along. I’m restructuring my offers and thinking of hiring my first team member.

I didn’t do all of that at once, and I couldn’t have. It took one brick at a time, just like a Lego set. And I’m still building, refining, and still figuring it out. Because that’s the process. And I’m loving every minute.

Your Business is a Lego Set

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by everything you think you need to build in your business—stop!

You don’t need to do it all at once. You just need to find the next piece, put it in place, and move to the next one.

Follow the instructions (your systems).
Get creative when it makes sense.
Take things apart when they’re not working.
Enjoy the process.

And trust that one brick at a time, you’re building something incredible.
