It almost always feels like someone is watching us like a hawk and not allowing us to do our work without constant oversight. But when I really started to think about the concept of being a micromanager, a question popped up in my head…
Are you a micromanager to yourself?
Often times, we can be really hard on ourselves. After all, we are our own worst critic and when that happens, we actually cause more harm than good. So when you look at it from this perspective, that of being a micromanager to yourself, your initial answer is probably “No way, I’m. not doing that!” But I’m challenging you to look again.
When I first did this self-reflection exercise, I noticed a few things. I would beat myself up when I ate a cookie after a workout. Not completing tasks on my To Do List would make me nitpick about how I used my time. If I wore sweats all day, I’d shame myself for not getting dressed. So to answer the question, yes, I was definitely micromanaging myself.
When I think about micromanaging, I think of someone hovering over me, checking and double checking everything I do or constantly asking for an update even when they don’t need to or you don’t have one. While you might see it a little different, this is what a micromanager usually is like. So look at your life, you actions, your feelings and think about whether or not you do this to yourself. If you need it and are ok with this behavior, great! But if you’re like me and don’t need this in your life, say goodbye to it ASAP!
