Have you watched See on AppleTV? Hubby and I just recently finished watching the show and man, it was good! The last episode made me think about something that I want to share with you. It made me think about what it would be like if you lost your senses.
**THERE WILL BE SPOILERS SO CONTINUE READING WITH CAUTION!**
So you can get a full understanding of why I realized how often we take losing our sense for granted, let me explain the show. See has the premise that the whole world has gone through a pandemic (scary, right?!) and everyone has lost their sense of sight. However, there’s a handful of people that can still see. One woman is pregnant and gives birth to twins – a boy and a girl. Surprisingly, both can see. The twins grow up, learn to read and help their community in times of need.
Ultimately, the skills that the twins have come in really handy. People. are afraid of those that still have their sense of sight. Those can’t see call those those that have the sense a “witch” and wars breakout between communities. There is backstabbing and a whole lot of lying and sneakiness going on. The show was very graphic when it came to the fight scenes. But that’s not what shocked me.
The last episode is what got me. After the wars are over and the communities are at peace, the twins decide to go their separate ways. The boy stays with his community that cannot see. The girl leave the community she’s known her whole life and travels to one where the members can see. Despite having his sense of sight, the boy makes a choice he cannot take back. He decides to lose his eyesight so he can understand what his son, who is blind, is going through. I was shocked by this choice but it also made me think.
What would you do if you lost your senses?
Would you make the choice? If you lost your senses would you do it to be closer to the world your loved ones were in? I’m not so sure I would. We all have five senses: Sight, Hearing, Taste, Smell and Touch. The show focused on the sense of sight and my first thought would be how terrible it would be if I lost by eyesight. Funny enough, that might come one day because I have horrible eyesight. For now, I still have these amazing gifts.
- I can see colors, expressions on the faces of people and the beauty in this world.
- I can hear (even though it’s sometimes selective) conversations around me, laughter, birds chirping and the sounds of someone approaching.
- I can taste the flavors in my food and beverages.
- I can smell (even though not very well due to chronic sinusitis) coffee, food cooking, flowers and essential oils.
- I can touch fabrics and feel a warm embrace.
So which sense would I choose to lose? It’s a hard question to answer because I have it all and often times, I take it for granted. I think we all do. The show See made me realize how much I take things for granted sometimes. Including showing kindness to people that may not have one of these senses. The moral of this podcast/post is that I want you to think about what you have and don’t take it for granted. Empathize with those that don’t have what you have and help them if you can.
